Spinal Wellness Tips

NBPS Fountain Valley >> Spinal Wellness Tips

Most spine problems do not come from one dramatic moment. They build slowly through everyday habits: how you stand, how you sit, how you lift, even how you sleep. The good news is that small corrections in these daily patterns go a long way toward keeping your spine healthy. Here are the habits Dr. Balta recommends to patients at our Fountain Valley clinic.

Standing

If you know you will be on your feet for a long stretch, start with supportive shoes. Then check your posture: chin up, shoulders back, and both feet about shoulder width apart so your weight is evenly distributed. Good posture is the single biggest key to a healthy spine, and it costs nothing but attention.

Working at a Desk

Get up every 30 minutes, even if it is just a short walk around the room. Sitting position matters too. Use a chair with good lower back support, keep your feet flat on the floor with your knees at a 90 degree angle, and bring a footstool to work if you need one to get there. Your screen should sit at eye level so you are not spending the day looking down. For more on breaking up desk time, see our guide on reducing your sitting time.

Lifting

Lifting is one of the most common ways people hurt their backs. Squat down to the object with one foot slightly in front of the other. Keep your back straight and bend only at the knees and hips. Look forward, lift by straightening your legs, and hold the object close to your body. Never twist while picking something up. Turn only once you are fully upright, and use the same technique when setting the object back down.

Warming Up for Physical Activity

Any time you are about to work or play for a while, warm up first. This applies to light activities too. Gardening, yard work, or pushing your child on a bike can all pull something if your body is not prepared. A few minutes of gentle movement and stretching beforehand makes a real difference. Our therapeutic exercise page covers how guided movement supports a healthy spine.

Talking on the Telephone

If you spend long periods on the phone, a speaker or headset is a must. Cradling the phone between your neck and shoulder strains the muscles and vertebrae in that area, and over time it is a reliable recipe for neck pain and headaches.

Resting or Sleeping

Straining your neck or back during sleep is more common than most people realize. We often fall asleep unsupported or with the neck at an odd angle. Choose a pillow that keeps your head and neck neutral with the rest of your spine, and avoid sleeping on your stomach, which puts stress on both your neck and your lower back.

Already dealing with pain? Good habits help prevent problems, but they will not undo restrictions that have already built up in the spine. If your back or neck has been bothering you, call Neck and Back Pain Specialists at (714) 968-4446 or book an appointment with Dr. Balta in Fountain Valley.
