NBPS Fountain Valley >> Interferential Current Therapy
Interferential current therapy, often shortened to IFC, is a form of electrical stimulation used to relieve pain, calm muscle spasm, and reduce swelling. If you have ever had small electrode pads placed on your back or shoulder during a therapy session and felt a gentle tingling sensation, there is a good chance it was interferential current at work.
At Neck and Back Pain Specialists in Fountain Valley, Dr. Balta uses IFC alongside chiropractic adjustments and other therapies as part of a complete care plan, particularly for patients dealing with acute pain, muscle tightness, or recovery after an injury.
IFC uses two medium frequency electrical currents that cross paths within the tissue being treated. Where the currents intersect, they create a gentle therapeutic frequency deep in the muscle and surrounding tissue. Because the currents are medium frequency, they pass through the skin with less resistance than standard TENS units, which means IFC can reach deeper tissue while staying comfortable on the surface.
The sensation is usually described as a light tingling or pins and needles feeling. Sessions are relaxing, and many patients find their muscles feel noticeably looser afterward.
Interferential current therapy is most often used for pain relief and muscle relaxation. It helps interrupt pain signals traveling to the brain, encourages circulation in the treated area, and reduces the muscle guarding that so often develops around an injury or a painful joint.
At our clinic, IFC is commonly part of care plans for back pain, neck pain, sciatica, and recovery from auto injuries and work injuries, where calming irritated muscles makes hands-on treatment more effective.
Electrical stimulation on its own manages symptoms. Its real value comes when it is combined with care that addresses the cause of the problem. That is how we use it at NBPS: IFC prepares the tissue by relaxing spasm and easing pain, which allows adjustments and therapeutic exercise to do their work more comfortably and effectively.
It also pairs well with our other supportive therapies, including electrical muscle stimulation and cold laser therapy, depending on what your condition needs.
Is IFC right for you? Every treatment at NBPS starts with a proper evaluation. Dr. Balta will assess your condition and let you know whether interferential current therapy belongs in your care plan. Call (714) 968-4446 or book an appointment online.
